Alloying elements and thermal treatments, such as quenching and tempering, greatly influence the hardness and strength of the steel.

AISI SAE 8620 Steel Properties, Chemical Composition AISI SAE 8620 Steel (UNS G86200) AISI SAE 8620 steel is a commonly used low-alloy material for carburizing, with excellent carburizing response, good hardenability for most section sizes, it has many extensive applications due to its low cost, better machinability, and availability.
Oliver Steel offers these chemistry-only alloy plate grades in the three most commonly used chemistries. 4140 is the standard for medium carbon chromium-molybdenum alloy with excellent response to quench-and-temper and moderate through hardening capabilities; at Oliver, our 4140 is modified to include a small amount of vanadium for even better
Alloy Steel Resource Guide Key Metals Online Metal Supplier4140 PH/HT Alloy Steel. 4140 heat treated alloy is a chromium-molybdenum, medium carbon alloy steel, and is used in a wide variety of applications requiring high strength and toughness. The chromium imparts good hardness penetration while molybdenum provides hardness uniformity and strength.

The purpose of these processes is to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of this steel. 4140 steel is annealed at 872°C which is equivalent to 1600°F. After that, the steel is cooled in a furnace. On the other hand, 4140 steel has tampered at the temperatures of between 200°C and 650°C.
HomeGunsmith Static ArchiveI haven't used it, but I would consider 8620 to be just about the ultimate receiver material, when case hardened. Probably no stronger than 4140, but with that super hard and slick skin on it, almost any action would work slicker and last longer. Compared to case hardened 1018, it gives much better core qualities and more backup for the case.
Machining 4140 Alloy Steel Swiss Parts Cox Manufacturing Steel alloy 4140 cold roll is a popular general-purpose alloy, ideal for parts that require high tensile strength and toughness. It has considerable atmospheric corrosion and wear resistance, and will not become brittle. 4140 has a machining cost factor of 2.9 when compared to steel 12L14. It is not ideal for welding due to its lead content.
